JAC/ comprehension process

Last weeks reading has helped me to take a closer look at not only my comprehension processes but also my girls. I now understand that there are different ways and strategies that has help me to be successful and foster growth along the way. Any time I was able to make a connection I was off to a good start and most likely would accomplish a task. If I am not able to make a connection I often feel less motivated to work on the task at hand. I am also a visual learner and with hands on activities most time they aid my comprehension. Becoming engage with the text making text-to text, or text to self connections has helped my comprehension. When it comes to news words I can not comprehend if I am lost which means I always needed to find the meaning to new words. As a result of this I am able to understand what I am reading better. I also like having clues to aide my comprehension at times in my head I am making predictions, questioning the text of even drawing my own conclusions. Over the years I have found KWL charts very helpful, Story mapping, story pyramids, and reading on line. The readings has help me to see that there is not just one way or method that is completely responsible for my comprehension process, but many different strategies, and methods working together, which results in me being successful most of the times.

  1. Going back to the learning styles test we did at the beginning of the semester, I don't think there are many people that just fit into one category of learner. Most of us are a mix of many different categories. Therefore, it is not surprising that most of us learn through a variety of methods. I keep trying to remind myself of this idea when I am creating my lessons and working in anyway with kids.

  2. And replying to you it is so hard for students when teachers expect them to be what they are not. When teaching my lesson I really saw how it can benefit a community of learners by have centers in a classroom community. Centers cater to a wide range of learners and give students the opportunity to be responsible for their learning, and their peers. I feel that it works better than the old form of teaching, where teachers give students information and then they regurgitate it back out.
