Digital Emergent Learning

When taking the digital native test, I discovered I am not necessarily a technology native. I am proficient in many different areas of technology, however I still have much to learn. I would define myself as a digital native in that I have grown up with the emergence of video games, MTV, email, instant messaging, etc. Technology has been an effective tool in my learning. And that is how being a digital native connects to my emergent digital literacy.
I feel that digital literacy in our generation is emergent in 3 ways.
1) Learning emerges from the work itself. Ofcourse, it is very important that kids learn the difference between what is a reputable source and what isnt. However, a child can go on the internet to find information on a research project or to learn new vocabulary or become familiar with a new math concept and while doing this work they learn a great deal of information that is useful for them.
2) Proficiency on topics and how to use technological tools is built through repeated use and comparisons of results. The more students use a variety of technology, the more proficient they become.
3) By taking on each new challenge with technology and trying new digital methods and tools, success and confidence begins to build. This will create a positive track record in technology for the student that will encourage them to continue to expand their knowledge of technological tools and tackle larger challenges digitally.
