Mini-Lesson on Fluency
My book club novel is "Kira-Kira" by Cynthia Kadohata. I am not sure how formal this is suppose to be but the lesson I had in mind involved doing multiple readers theater. I saw my book as being around a fifth grade level. It is marked for ages 10 to 14 but I am going to be a little optimistic and say fifth grade (plus that is the grade I am currently working in). My lesson would be presented after everyone has read the book and there as been some discussion over some of the main themes and ideas. I would start by explaining what a reader’s theater is and how it can help to really understand a story. Then I would go on to break the class into groups of about four or five and assign each a section from the book that I have turned into a script. The scenes I was thinking of are when the father goes and apologies to his boss for ruining his car, when the goes crazy and smashes his bosses car, when Katie steal the nail polish, and when Same get caught in the animal trap. Once everyone had their group and script I would ask them to read through the script and pick parts. If necessary I would help some of the groups decide who would play each character. Then the class would spend some time practicing together and I would walk around giving constructive feedback and encouragement to each group. I would ask them to think about how fast they are talking, if they are using appropriate phrasing and tone, and to think about projecting their voices for the performance. Once everyone was ready we would take turns performing for each other. In the course of the lesson we would not only work on fluency through rereading, setting a good speed to our reading, using phrasing, and focusing on prosody but we would also practice being good listeners and giving constructive feedback to groups. The lesson would end with some sort of quick write about how the story could relate to the students lives.
