I didn’t come into this course with any specific learning goals in mind. However, after reading through the course syllabus I can tell you that there are many areas of this course that hold my interest. In general I want to learn how to be a better English Language Arts teacher. I have been communicating through writing, reading, speaking, and listening to others for almost twenty five years now, so you would think that teaching someone else about these skills would be easy. However, many of these things I have done for so long that I don’t even thinking about them anymore. They are automatic for me. Therefore, when it comes time to teach someone else these skills I am often at a loss for how to convey all the little things that I do so readily. I have had some classes already to aid me in this area but I am always looking for new information and approaches that could help me and my future students. I had a very hard time learning how to read and write so it is my goal to make the process as sooth and enjoyable for my students as possible. Through the years I have learned to think of reading, writing, and communicating in general as pleasurable experiences that connect to every area of my life. I want my students to have that same view.

I like the way you started out saying you did not come with any specific goals in mind. At time we can overload ourselves by having our own goals while our professors have their own goals for us. I felt that it was very good that you recognize some of your habits relating to reading, writing, and speaking. This can help you as you work with students because you are aware of the problem. Similarly to you my goal is to make teaching and learning Language Arts enjoyable for my students as well as myself. Being out in the fields I am exposed to ways of not teaching, as well as successful strategies that can help students enjoy learning. I am hoping that we can impact our students at an earlier age so that they won’t have to go through some of the struggles we went through. If our class can have at least ten people who can bring Language Arts to life like Emily last semester brought Social Study we would be off to a great start. Finally I agree with your view point that Language Arts is connected to every area of our lives.
ReplyDeleteHey Jess!
ReplyDeleteI also want to be a better English Language Arts Teacher. You would think as a college student, you would understand HOW you read and write, but it just comes so naturally now that the idea of teaching it to others scares me! How do you begin to teach students to create sounds and words? And as a teacher there is also the pressure of helping each student individually read and write. I want to learn some new approaches and information that will aid me in teaching my students also. Anything that will make this daunting task easier. Through my experiences, writing and reading have been more of a chore than a pleasure. I only recently have begun reading for pleasure. I want my students to find English Language Arts exciting and reading to be a pleasure at an early age and to take that into their adult years.
